Barnstable is Cape Cod's largest town by area, encompassing seven distinct villages including Hyannis, the Cape's commercial hub and home to the Kennedy family compound. It's known for its active harbor, Cape Cod Hospital, major transport links, and the historic Barnstable County Courthouse on Route 6A.
Explore Hyannis's bustling Main Street, visit the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, and take a whale watch or whale watching trip from Hyannis Harbor. Craigville Beach is one of the Cape's most popular. The Sandy Neck barrier beach in Barnstable village offers dune hikes. Route 6A has antique shops and galleries.
Hyannis offers the Cape's widest restaurant range. Raw Bar at the harbor is excellent for oysters. The Naked Oyster is a local seafood favorite. Brazilian and Portuguese restaurants reflect the town's diverse community. Osterville village, part of Barnstable, has upscale dining options popular with summer residents.
Barnstable is very family-friendly. Craigville and Veterans beaches are calm and well-facilitated. Hyannis has mini-golf, ice cream shops, and ferry trips to Nantucket and the Vineyard. The JFK Museum is excellent for older children interested in history. Sandy Neck Beach Park has ranger-led activities in summer.
Summer is peak season with beaches, outdoor dining and whale watches in full swing. July and August are busiest in Hyannis. The shoulder seasons of June and September offer better value and shorter queues. Autumn is particularly good for cycling Route 6A's scenic stretch through Barnstable and Cummaquid villages.
